Honouring the Name of God

Questions 99–100

What is required in the third commandment?

We must not misuse or abuse God’s name by cursing, perjury, or rash swearing, or share in these terrible sins in others by our silence or complicity. In brief, we must use God’s holy name only with fear and reverence, so that He may be rightly confessed, worshipped, and glorified in all our words and works.

Is dishonouring God’s name by swearing and cursing so serious that His wrath is kindled against those who fail to do all they can to prevent it?

It certainly is, for there is no sin greater or more provoking to God than the dishonouring of His name, and therefore He has commanded this sin to be punished with death.
